Graeme

Support Worker

About Me

Hi, I’m Graeme from Perth, a very proud father of two amazing “children” aged 22 and 24. One of my first passions was for food and cooking, so I became a chef and worked in the industry for 15 years. I then shifted to my long enjoyment of photography and had a business in Real-Estate and then Sports photography. So far the greatest achievement of my career, and one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, has been when I opened a small business in Joondalup called Deca-dance, 12 years ago. We hosted disco parties for children aged 3-13 years, as well as running weekly sessions for schools, childcare centres and many organisations within the disability and autism sectors. It was extremely fulfilling being able to interact and learn from a diverse group of children. This experience has inspired me to pursue a new career as a support worker, so after selling the business in 2023, I completed a Certificate III in Individual Support.

What are some of my strengths and hobbies?

My caring nature is a significant strength and I am extremely reliable. I adapt well to varying situations and have genuine empathy. I love the outdoors and regularly go camping with the family on holidays where we can go hiking, kayaking and sometimes fishing. I am a keen photographer, mostly of wildlife and landscapes. To keep fit I frequently ride around Lake Joondalup and go for long beach or bush walks. My family and I like to spend time together playing all types of board games.

What do I enjoy learning about?

I enjoy learning about mental health and techniques to connect with the subconscious mind through meditation and breathing. I sincerely believe in the importance of family and having good support networks around you. This passion to learn more about mental health came from my own personal experience 15 years ago when I suffered from clinical depression due to insomnia attributed to business stress. Working through this has given me a greater awareness of mental health and the desire to help others. Learning about the universe and astronomy is also something I enjoy. I’m fascinated by the size of the universe and how technology is allowing us to understand it better. I have a telescope and try to get out of the city lights to star gaze when I can.

Why do I like supporting children with an autism diagnosis and their families?

Firstly, it is essential that families and their children with an autism diagnosis have the confidence and knowledge that the person they are being supported by is trustworthy and dedicated to providing the best care possible. I know I can contribute in a respectful and positive manner and provide that support, and I want to make a difference in their lives. Through my experience at Decadance, I’ve met so many amazingly diverse children who have taught me so much about myself. Listening to them so eagerly share stories about their lives shows how their uniqueness is a strength that adds to their potential. This is something that I find invaluable and inspires me to help them achieve their very best. Every child deserves the opportunity to grow and be supported by good people who really care about them.
