Support Worker

About Me

I am 19 years old and currently on a break from my university studies (occupational therapy). I have always had a passion with helping people and have always known that working with kids and trying to make a difference is what I wanted to do. I began doing support work as soon as I could. I am a carer for my younger brother who has an autism diagnosis and I understand the need for patience, flexibility and understanding how an autistic child may be trying to communicate a need.

What are some of my strengths and hobbies?

My hobbies are being outside, doing activities, being around the beach, spending time with my family and friends and I also love music, art and sport! My strengths include being good with kids. I am often helping raise my younger brother who was diagnosed with autism at a young age. This lived experience has helped develop my own skills and strengths as I learned how to communicate with people who do not naturally pick up these skills easily. I find I can engage younger people and can connect with them so that they feel comfortable and safe. Another strength I have is determination and drive - when I enjoy something or know I need to do it to get better I push myself to ensure I get it done. I am very outgoing and will go out of my comfort zone when necessary. I believe I am a very kind and welcoming person and I love chatting and making people laugh.

What do I enjoy learning about?

I enjoy learning about the mind. I love learning about social work, support work, counselling and psychology. I believe all of these tie in together and can help children and this is my goal in life.

Why do I like supporting children with an autism diagnosis and their families?

I want to make a difference and help children and their families.
